Say Hey alum Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson has a new record coming out on Saddle Creek on October 20th. It's going to be great. 04/19/2009 New White Rabbits Album. Shy Child Record, MBAR in the UK As Tom Petty opined, waiting is the hardest part. Luckily for White Rabbits and for their fans, we have a scant 4 weeks to go until their follow up, "It's Frightening", hits the stores via TBD Records. The Britt Daniel produced sophomore effort shows the band expanding their considerable talents in crafting a set matched only in it's brilliance by it's intensity. We're biased of course, but the lads have truly turned a corner on this one. And it will be evidenced when they have left you (when you're standing in the audience) sweaty and agape, the last notes ringing in your ears as you queue madly for the merch table.Speaking of the seemingly never ending tour cycle kicks off in May, so check the dates to see when they'll be in town. Shy Child have returned to the studio with Chris Zane and are currently tracking their new album. The new demos sound expansive, gauzy, and have the duo swinging for the fences. A list here we come... Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson has had his UK release thanks to the good people at Transgressive. He'll be touring the UK in May and look for dates In The States this summer. Things we like: Robert Coover's "The Public Burning", David Crosby's "If Only I could Remember My Name", Breaking Bad, Fantasy Baseball. 08/18/2008 Shy Child to Europe, Miles Hits the Road, White Rabbits Gets to Writing Shy Child return from tour this week, just long enough to ponder the miles traversed and their mess of hotel receipts, before embarking on an international whistle stop tour that will land them in the exotic locals of Norway, Lebanon and Italy, all in the course of a week. With festival dates in each of those territories the duo will be stateside again at the end of the month to continue work on their forthcoming album. We should have an announcement soon regarding ever more outlandish personal appearances.Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson continues to play New York in preparation for his month long tour in September in support of TV On the Radio and then latter with Damien Jurardo. We've been collecting press accolades like bubble gum cards for his self-titled album, and soon he'll be in your town. What is truly astounding is that Mr. Robinson has already completed his follow up album, (this time with Kyp Malone at the helm) and from what we have heard, it promises to be every bit the equal of his first and beyond. White Rabbits have retreated into the practice space and are busily writing their follow album and debut for TBD. Look for it in the Spring. Things We Like: The Recognitions / Kevin Phillips / Ya Ho Wa 13 / Dri 03/17/2008 White Rabbits & Shy Child Sign New Deals, Tour In keeping with Say Hey's tradition of graduating our bands to larger labels both White Rabbits and Shy Child signed deals this last week. White Rabbits has the distinction of being the first American signing to TBD Records, current home to a little known English band named Radiohead, while Shy Child's "Noise Won't Stop" will see release on the esteemed indie, Kill Rock Stars this May.Shy Child will be hitting the road this spring in support of the album that earned them their UK celebrity, so stay tuned for updates and tour dates. In the meantime, not to be satisfied, or exhausted for that matter, with their past year's accomplishments, the band is hard at work writing and demoing in between dates this summer. For you collectors out there, please note that the US version of the record will contain 2 tracks that were not on the the UK version. White Rabbits are also in the writing mode, gathering chestnuts for what will be their sophomore effort due in early 2009. Check back for dates in the "Never Ending Tour" through this spring. We wish them both the greatest of luck, and they couldn't be in better company(s). From here on out Say Hey is at your service for all your management needs. You can still catch them in SF, LA (w/ Yo Majesty!), Denver and Des Moines, before they embark to the UK for sets at Glastonbury and showcases in London. PITCHFORK MAKES OUR WEEK Fort Nightly SHY CHILD PLAYS LATER AND WEMBLEY STADIUM! Hot off the heels of their sold out UK tour in support of Klaxons Shy Child has been making the most of their summer across the pond with headlining dates and festival slots in the UK and Europe. In a manifestation of our high school fantasies Shy Child played a set on the prestigious Later With Jools Holland and jammed with non other than Bjork and Sir Paul McCartney. No really, it happened. Tom Morello and the Editors were in on it for good measure as well. Although that would have been enough Shy Child have been tapped to be the first opener for progish superstars, Muse at Wembley Stadium! You can see these dates in addition to the more earth bound gigs in the events section. Arising from the winter of our discontent, we shake the salt-flecked snow from our boots and wring the darkened winter’s light from our eyes and glimpse at the verdant days ahead, just in the distance. Perhaps it is slightly premature to be considering spring while still slogging through the slushy sidewalks of the city, but we cannot help but be reminded of rebirth, newness, and the expectations of a new season because we have new records! It has finally come to pass; we are currently in possession of new albums from both Shy Child and White Rabbits. Our enthusiasm is boundless and our delight exuberant on occasion of both but we’ll go in order of seniority in this proclamationShy Child’s latest offering is titled “Noise Won’t Stop” and it is slated for a U.K. release on Wall of Sound on May 21st. The long, and at time arduous, though never unsatisfying, road that began a full 12 months ago when we entered the studio to begin tracking with Mms. Zane and Epworth has finally arrived at its destination. This past year saw Shy Child make many and repeated trips across The Pond and we are proud to say the efforts have not been in vain. Not only has the first 7 inch single “Drop the Phone / Down On Yourself” gained spins throughout the DJ intelligencia, the video have been a recent staple on English MTV2 programming. Shy Child is currently preparing their follow up single “Noise Won’t Stop / Cause and Effect”, with the attendant video in production as well of course. But the grandest news to herald for Shy Child is the announcement that the band has landed the main support for Klaxons UK tour in May. Dates for various UK and European slated for April are posted in the Events section as well. Now on to the news from our graduating class: White Rabbits have completed their debut long player entitled “Fort Nightly” to be released on May 22. It has been a swift year passing since we made the acquaintance of five, now six, apple-cheeked Missouri transplants in the snowy environs of New York. Since that time it has been our pleasure to see these resolute young men become a truly formidable band, and to have recorded a record that stands as a testament to their creativity and unique musical voice. As always, we could not have undertaken the momentous task of the completion of this record without the work of Chris Zane and Gigantic. Thank you. Ever onward, White Rabbits will be taking the show to the happenings at SXSW this year with select stops on the rout down. Please check the event board for a full update as to what is coming, and expect much more thanks to the good people at Big Shot as well. We endeavor for the remainder of 2007 to be filled with ever-greater accomplishments and new adventures. So here’s too it… Things we Like: Alphaville, Rome, Sam Harris, Sherwood Anderson, Bobby Womack, The Wages of Fear, Bertrand Russell (still), Comus, Merle Haggard, Bach. 12/01/2006 Hang Around the Ink Well, Ring a Bell, Hard to Tell if Anything is Gonna Sell…. CMJ RECAP:A fortnight removed from the harried days of the latest CMJ, we have occasion to look back on the events of that week and give you all our summary account. In all, it was a fine week of semi-vacational working complete with impromptu lunch’s meets, drinks, friends from out of town, 2 lovely French dinners, and some heady talk of the near future. As always, despite the near hundred’s of bands from around the world we were hardly to catch a set aside from our New York friends. Inouk Reunites! Inouk played it’s first show in almost 18 months, and it’s first since the departure of Damon McMahon in his persuit of a solo career. The reconstituted Inouk includes all of the rest of the previous members along with the addition of new drummer, Ezra Oaklan, (with original drummer Glenn Brasile moving to guitar and keys, for those of you keeping score at home.) The band has spent the intervening months slaving away in their practice space and they have just completed an incredible set of new originals. The band will be playing out again so be sure to catch a set and see the tightest band yet to play out! Rabbits kill it at CMJ, soon to finish debut album. White Rabbits played two blistering sets at Piano’s and The Cakeshop respectively. Thanks to Gigantic for letting us slide into a set on their night on Saturday. The response to the band has been great so far, and we couldn’t be any prouder. We knew we were on to something special a few months ago but it’s been great to see the rest of the crowd nodding in agreement. The record is well nigh completion and the band has recently posted a new song on Myspace. We hope to have some press release worthy news for you shortly. Shy Child Wraps up with Hot Chip, readies new record. Shy Child swung through town and played a dinner theater set time at the grand Wwebster Hall before hitting the road again with Hot Chip. Along with Born Ruffians and Hot Chip, Shy Child made it to the Sunshine Coast recently completing the tour last night in San Diego. Predictably, Shy Child is off to the wilds of Europe again to close out 2006, a year which saw no less then 5 separate trips across, to play some select dates in the U.K. and make their inaugural appearance at Transmusicales in December. The new record should be ready by Xmas and a new single is slated for early 07 as well. So close… Say Hey is close to making an announcement that should/could/hopefully /maybe bring a new band into the fold, but we’re exercising silence until the ink is dried. It’s taking all we have not to drop a hint. Things we like: J.M. Roberts’ “History of the World”, Tell All Your Friends, Plant Records, Stephanie McKay 09/20/2006 Shy Child Sign Deal, Tour! Shy Child will be on tour this November supporting everyone’s favorite champions of repetition, Hot Chip! Check out the events page to see the confirmed dates and be sure to check back regularly because we’ll be adding a few more before it all starts. Canadian darlings Born Ruffians will be in the caravan as well. This is not to be missed! As a result of no less than 5 separate sojourns to the United Kingdom Shy Child has garnered the coveted title of buzz band, but more importantly, it has yielded a record deal as well! Shy Child has become the first official signing of a newly merged indie powerhouse consisting of the label and distribution juggernaut PIAS and the dance factory that is Wall of Sound. We’re all thrilled to be with such a new and vital (pun intended) company that will be able to stretch its tentacles far and wide across the face of the Continent…and beyond. Shy Child has been furiously slaving away to finish the new long-player that will be ready for the world early next year. Stay tuned for more dates, festivals and information about the record cause it will have some surprises for you, we promise. In the meantime check out this pro recording of their show in London from July by the fine blokes at Record-Play: Shy Child Live White Rabbits have also finished the tracking for their debut album under the guiding hand and tutelage of Chris Zane. Though it has yet to be blessed with a title, hell, some of the songs aren’t even named yet, trust us when we tell you this is going to be a debut for the ages. One of our closest confidants was heard to say upon hearing the songs, “The Internet isn’t ready for this shit!” We couldn’t agree more, but those of you lucky enough to like in the grand city that is New York will have ample opportunity to see the kids in action, so be sure to check out the events page for show details. Alessandra Maria the brains, the looks, the talent behind Tomorrow’s Friend will be taking her circus out on the road along with Say Hey ex-pat Damon Mcmahon, formerly of Inouk, for a run of impromptu shows and college radio performances for the last part of September. Ah…psych-folk bliss. Congratulations to The Boggs who have recently found a new permanent home with the good folks at Gigantic Music. Prepare yourselves now for Mr. Friedman’s forthcoming opus, Forts, which will be out early next year. The Occasion will be doing a show this coming week at the pier on the Fulton Street Fishmarket. You su2 is very over the top 07/23/2006 Boggs Release New Single! Shy Child Tours, Records; White Rabbits in the Studio, The Occasion on the BBC! Here we are amidst the dazzling broth of the summer air in Brooklyn, thick and gaseous, engendering all variety of exhaust and pleasant satiety, willing us on to sleep or else air conditioning. Though despite the stern warnings relating to the heat index or the occasional triple digit mercury reading this has been, already, quite an eventful summer. It has been one of intercontinental travel, recordings, releases, and departures. Let us begin…July is all about the triumphal return of The Boggs. Out now is the LIMITED EDITION 12” single of “Arm In Arm”, which by our humble account is the single greatest song in Mr. Friedman’s registry to date. This prime piece of vinyl come s with additional mixes by Shy Child and the mysterious outfit known publicly as The Glass Factory. Look for The Boggs out on the West Coast playing a special engagement sponsored by the good people at Ezekiel Clothing. Stay tuned in for more Boggs appearances and news of their upcoming full length, “Forts”. Shy Child is just now finishing up yet another run of dates in the U.K. and Europe and are poised to go back yet again in late August. This last jaunt found the boys all over England and Amsterdam. We’re very very close to announcing an exciting new partnership with an overseas label that we can’t wait to be a part of, details on the new recordings, and what would be a dream of a fall tour in the U.S. but as Muddy Waters said “When you have something good, keep it in your pocket”. You can check out a live clip of the boys in London here: http://www.recordplay.com/recording/show/Shy_Child_Live_at_Mean_Fiddler Speaking of the U.K. The Occasion will soon be making their debut with the release of “Cannery Hours” via 1965 Records. The press has been great, you can read the highlights on The Occasion’s page, and look for some touring in the fall. The band has also been interviewed by BBC’s Radio One, so The Occasion is now reaching the farthest corners of our world, hear it at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/oneworld/ White Rabbits are furiously finishing their debut long player with Chris Zane. Last we heard the crew was headed upstate to finish the vocals in the calm of the wilds, in a cabin. However, the Rabbits have not forsaken the humid confines of our dear metropolis and can be seen this July 25th at The Annex, and more shows will be on the way. They have begun to garner quite the reputation, come and see for yourself; The Simple Mission. Kiila’s “Heartcore” has been out a few weeks now and it’s been getting some great play at radio, thanks to Amanda at Chouette. This record is a small gem, don’t let it pass you by! Alessandra Maria, aka Tomorrow’s Friend, has transplanted her impenetrable sun-soaked mysticism and is preaching to the love choir from the craggy palm lined hills of Los Angeles. We’re sure that she’ll have a commune of likeminded seekers in no time at all. We miser her and hope that we see her soon. Things we like: Saul Bellow’s “Herzog”, Au Revoir Simone, O’ Death, Isaac Babel, Eric Fromm, 06/02/2006 Shy Child Invades UK, Kiila's debut released, White Rabbits record, Boggs ready 12 After a long delay in our much promised updates, here’s one for those few, those happy few, who have reminded us that we’ve been too slow with new information….Shy Child has recently returned from their third trip in as many months from the UK. After 2 weeks of dates the boys will be back in NYC finishing their new tracks and cutting up some familiar songs for re-mix projects. But the proverbial noise doesn’t stop there. Shy Child has 3 NYC shows set up in June and then they’re heading back to Europe in July for festival dates with Chemical Brothers in London, Hot Chip in Amsterdam, and more than a few more. Usually we’d use more eloquent verbiage to express our joy with this but holy fuckcakes, this is starting to get fun. Check out the events for their first string of New York shows in months, and not their return Europe in July. We’re very close to announcing some exciting news so stay tuned! Kiila’s inaugural album “Heartcore” saw its U.S. release on May 30th. Although the Fonal label, with it’s expansive stable of progressive folk artists and collective recording projects has been well known to the seekers and searchers of the world, we have been hoping to highlight one of our favorites with this record. We’ve long contended that “Heartcore” sounds like This Heat meets the Paw Tracks catalog. We’ve heard others mention Krautrock and Freak Folk but whatever you’re preference in descriptions may be we’re sure you’ll be as excited as we are once you hear it. The Boggs return with their first stateside release in over 2 years with a 12” single for the lead track, “Arm In Arm”, from their forthcoming album, Forts, dune in the fall. Say Hey have this hot little item complete with mixes from Shy Child and The Glass Family in July. Once again, this is a limited pressing so get em while the getting’s good. White Rabbits are in the studio busily working on their debut record. They have certainly been the most enigmatic of out new additions but those of you in NYC will have ample time to catch the band this summer, so make it a point to check up for dates. The Occasion was spotted playing a gig in Brooklyn last weekend with Say Hey x-patriot, Damon Mcmahon. We’re happy to report that they are out in the world as a three piece (dare we say power trio?) and they are working on new material as well. Those of you in the UK, Look for “Cannery Hours” to be issued on 1965 Records this summer and for the band to be across the sea for their first shows outside the states! Tomorrow’s Friend will be making an NYC appearance on June 6th at the X-Girl store located at 265 Lafayette. Come and check them out and pick up on e of the new 12” singles while they last…Also they will be playing the City Sol fest as well. Things We Like: Deerhunter, Ghost Wars, A.R. And what have such intrepid expeditions into the deep yielded to us? Quite bit indeed. To being with, the long anticipated 12” single by Tomorrow’s Friend (see the arresting woodland scene photo) has finally arrived and is available on our site and other fine retailers. The 12” marks our first venture with Miss Maria and company as well as our first foray into the haughty arena of the vinyl only release. This is a limited edition pressing so get yours while there are still some to be gotten. Say Hey has added 2 new bands to the flock. The first is White Rabbits. Newly transplanted to The City, this Missouri quintet so impressed us that we simply had to sign them on the spot. Their, sparking brand of rock is replete with vocal harmonies, staccato guitar lines and so many hooks that they have inspired many who have seen them to declare that the songs are indeed, “catchy as fuck!” We’re sure you will agree soon enough cause they really are that good and just the cure for your supercilious and jaded posturing New York. The Rabbits will be heading into the studio with Dr. Zane come the spring. The Say Hey page will be here directly. The second addition to the fold is a band from the wilds of Norway, named Kiila. While we get a certain giddy pleasure when speaking their name, let us assure you that the music is menacing only in its beauty. Kiila is only the tip of the iceberg, which comprises an entire psych-folk collective under the guidance of remarkable Fonal Records label. The Say Hey page will be here directly. Shy Child and Co., are embarking on the first trip to the U.K. for a week of select shows and some press glad-handing. Stay tuned, for more U.S. show updates, after the unfortunate timing of the Test Icicles implosion, there will be more. Things We Like: Robert Nozick “Anarchy, The State, Utopia”, Somebody Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Various, Brille Records, Sun Ra’s “Space Is the Place”, Archie Shepp’s “Attica Blues”, any version of “Is That All there Is” (See Peggy Lee v PJ Harvey). 01/17/2006 The Characteristic of the True Musician is to Compose No Music, Play No Instrument, and to Despise Virtuosos Walking the streaked pavement in our prematurely sunset city, ensconced in our winter wools, our curses evaporate with our breath as we thunder against the success of others and then, in turn, thunder against the jealousy that success brings to the fortunate and less deserving alike. And when there is no more to grit out teeth against we reflect on how another year happily chasing windmills awaits us in ought-six, and with any small amount of providence we will survive to see ourselves bruising our knees on the bathroom floor after an overimbibed New Years. Which, as it seems to us, is the best way to ring out the old and clear the way for the new.We digress. Let’s get to the music Shy Child will be in the studio with Paul Epworth and Chris Zane laying down the initial tracks for their highly anticipated follow up to “One With the Sun”, which, alike so many other records at this point is laboring under the familiar title of TBA. Don’t despair, Shy Child will be playing more, many more, shows this year, starting with a show at Maxwell’s on the 20th and followed by their inaugural tour of Albion in early March. Needless to say, we’re all excited. Tomorrow’s Friend will have the 12inch single ready in but a few weeks. Not only is this Say Hey’s first foray in the world of vinyl only releases, this is our first, and hopefully not the last, installment from Miss Maria and company. More details soon, when we have it all packed up and ready. The Occasion are at Seaside concocting new melodies. We've been told things are going better than ever. There will be quite a bit more in the upcoming weeks to stay informed of, and though we have the vague recollection of proclaiming the very same resolution at the onset of the year now past, we promise to update this page more faithfully and with greater thoroughness. Right after we quit alcohol, caffeine, and begin a strict workout regimen. Greetings from the steadily chilling clime of our Northern Industrial Complex. The autumn winds are turning the leaves, on the few trees our fair city can claim, into the colors of decay, as they turn our cheeks a likewise red. So before our next dispatch, to be sent from what will surely be the bone-crushing, sub-arctic ridiculousness of the coming winter, and we lose some of our spirit, we wanted to catch you all up on what’s been going on.The Occasion has returned from their cross-country tour with Acid Mother’s Temple and emerged as simply one of the best acts on stage in New York right now. Seriously. No foolin’. As they assured us from their infrequent but always welcomed calls from the road that they plan to keep doing this, and so they are. This week sees the band opening the first US shows for Art Brut and December will take them down through the southeastern states with the new Kinsella outfit,Make Believe. The new record, Cannery Hours, continues to gain praise and momentum. Take a peak at the press quotes that are getting added to their press section. Also, we’ll soon have pictures of Acid Mother’s Temple on stage with the band dancing about in Halloween costumes from the Occasion’s homecoming show in Brooklyn at Southpaw. Shy Child is out in the UK courtesy of the fine people at 679. The initial single for “The Noise Won’t Stop” with an instrumental version as the b-side hit ye olde shoppes in 7” form this month. For those of you across the pond, look for a follow up and EP in early ought-six. Shy Child begins tracking their follow up full length with Paul Epworth in January. Tomorrow’s Friend (soon to have their own section) has finished their single! The two tracks have wound and spun through their serpentine path, with stops at the Walkmen’s Mercata studio and Nicholas Vernhes’ Rare Book Room, and finally at Gigantic with our man Chris Zane, were they came to rest on the 1/2 inch machine, all nice and mixed. Without saying too much, the songs are both long and beautiful and will sound amazingly warm coming from your turntables in the coming months. We think snow will compliment it nicely. Things we like: Delia & Gavin, Cabaret Voltaire, Beethoven’s Late String Quartets, Moby Dick, Deer Hunter, Mike Wexler. 09/23/2005 The Occasion On Tour...Shy Child Remix...CFA Records...Tomorrow's Friend Single We’ll dispatch with the recounting of CMJ induced hangovers and all the amazing shows we saw, and there were quite a few, and get down to the here and now. After much stressful speculation as to the status of the Acid Mothers Temple tour, it is indeed a go! The visas are all sorted and the band is on their way to Seattle to start the tour on the west coast on October 27th and will be in the van until the end of October, playing just about everywhere there is to play in this land. If the final CMJ set by The Occasion is any precursor to this tour, then you are all in for a treat. Shy Child is poised to take over the U.K. Their debut single on Good and Evil / 679 is due to drop in November with a follow up and an EP due in December, along with a personal appearance or two. But that’s not all, no; Shy Child has also completed a re-mix of the Futureheads “Decent Days and Nights”. It’s available on I-Tunes but be sure to switch you country settings to the UK or you just won’t be able to find it. Whist we were running about during the past weeks festivities we had a moment to catch up with David from Cause for Applause who played us 5 new tracks that were, in a word, scorching, we’re really proud, impressed, and mightily encouraged to hear what the finished album will sound like. We recently made official a budding partnership with one of our favorite new bands,Tomorrow’s Friend. As talented as they are beautiful, they’ve been packing in shows with their disarming blend of harmony, drone, and unexpected melodies. We’ll have a limited edition single out before the year’s end, and it’s gonna be killer. For those of you above the border be sure to catch their set at Pop Montreal next week. Things we like: Trick and the Heartstrings, Chouette promotions, The Magister Ludi, Honeybus, The Celebration, Grizzly Bear, Bray Hammond. 07/29/2005 The Occasion Hit the Road...Inouk; What's In a Name?...CFA on the Comback...and Shy Child gets Hooked Up! As a welcomed effect of our salutary neglect for the updates on this site we actually have a lot of new and exciting information get out to you all. So let’s get down to it.Firstly, we hope you like the new look we’re adorning. The site is just like you remember it just wearing a new suit of clothes. Let us know what you think. The Occasion is taking their lysergic traveling circus on the road in August. They are starting out in Chi-town and will be meandering through the cities of the West with The Pony’s. Check out the dates, as this will be the ideal time to get a preview of the searing new tracks that will be unleashed on the world in October with the release of their sophomore recording, “Cannery Hours”. More dates, blanket press coverage, and rave reviews are sure to follow, mass media stars. Yes. In what is a far more complicated, and bittersweet, tale to relate, he saga of Inouk has seemingly come to conclusion. However, we will endeavor to give you, the reader, and a brief run down. Inouk signed with Astralwerks. Fucking aces! Then, in the process of transitioning tensions in the band heightened, surfaced, and caused a schism of irreparable proportions. Fucking tears! So what is to become of the band and it’s namesake? Well, all of our attempts to contact Roger Waters and David Gilmour for their sagely advice on such matters ended in silence, so all parties were left to fend for themselves. Now the brother’s McMahon has signed a deal with the aforementioned company but they have yet to decide upon a new moniker. Of course we wish them the best of luck in the future under whatever flag they will be flying and we will keep you up to date as to the fate of the remaining three. Stay tuned. Dispatches from the land of pure positivity bring us news of Shy Child. In the wake of SXSW Shy Child found themselves the object of desire of one most notable producer, Paul Epworth, (Futureheads, Bloc Party, Maximo Park). Phone calls were made, e-mails exchanged, and a deal was reached that will see Shy Child’s subsequent records joint released between 679 and Say Hey. How lucky can a band get? None more lucky. Look for tour dates this fall, and a trip across the pond. CFA, after months of silence, have returned to NYC, added the guitar skills of Mr. Jonathan Toubin, and have been playing around the city, reclaiming the position they rightly deserve. New recordings are in the works as well. And lastly, as a bit of shameless self-promotion, Iran is finishing their LP and will be playing their first live show on 7/31 at Zebulon in Brooklyn. Things we’re into: Tomorrow’s Friend, Les Rallizes Denudes, The Blossom Toes, Scary Monsters, Marvin Gaye’s “Here My Dear”, Slapp Happy, Calla, Joris-Karl Huysmans. 04/13/2005 Shy Child Tour Cancelled, The Occasion Finishes New Album, We Drove to Texas and Back Although the more informed among you may already know, our tardiness in updating this site has postponed the unfortunate news that Shy Child has had to cancel the Q and Not U dates that were scheduled for this month. Bummer. However, those of you living in Philly or NYC will be able to catch them with Outhud and Hella on 4/22 and n4/23 respectively. Don’t worry, all ye faithful, the kids will make it up to you this summer with new dates, but in the meantime go see Pete in his other outfit, Supersystem, next month when they come to your town.In a flash of better news, The Occasion have finished their new album, entitled “Cannery Hours”. The new CD has just been mastered and will be ready for the public’s ear in late summer or early fall. The new record clocks in with 9 tracks complete with a 10-minute psychedelic dirge and a myriad of spacious compositions. Check back for a sneak preview in a few weeks. We decided to sojourn to the Indie Rock Riviera, otherwise known as SXSW. The riding was made all the better by the Gigantic Studio’s Touring Van we drove down in. Full-dressed with plasma TV’s, stereo and gaming systems, leather captains chairs (with massage option), secret in dash fuzz buster, and smugglers compartments, we were half expecting Xzibit to pop out at any moment. Once there we drank too much, waited in line too long and realized that we had just driven 1500 miles to see all of our friends from NYC play sets. It’s nice to get away. Check back soon. We’re gonna get better with the updates we promise. Things we like: The Mountain Goats, Spinoza, Grizzly Bear, Peter Green (the original Fleetwood Mac!), Iran, The Wave Pictures, The Mystery Jets, Chunklet. 01/20/2005 Long Overdue Update So, our humblest of apologies to all ye faithful how may have been looking , in vain, for an update as to things here at Say Hey. We regret the lapse in communication but we’ve been rather preoccupied with the wretched business of cancer and it’s treatments these last few months. Not to worry, all things look bright and the road to recovery is almost completed. Now, onto the music. INOUK is on tour again, with their first shows west of the Mississippi! They have already begun selected dates with SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES, who are warming up for their new record due out this spring. We’ve heard rumors that SDK of Our Lives have been forced to change their name because Casey Casum is suing them, claiming that “The Soundtrack of Our Lives” is his catch phase, or some such bullshit. Let us know if these rumors are true. In any event, check out the vents section to see the remaining dates. There is also a hilarious, if not damming , interview with Jesse and Alexander in nerve.com. Check it out. THE OCCASION have finished their record. Yes. We’ve been privy to only a few songs so far but what we’ve heard is enormous. The new record promises to be the haunting score for the summer, which is, of course, when we plan to unleash it. Think Timbaland meets the Silver Apples. No shit. For those denizens of our great metroplolis, NYC Shy Child will be pulling double duty and playing both nights of the Urgh Fest Redux at the Knitting Factory on 9/24 and 9/25. For those of you not steeped in nerd rock, Urgh Fest was a music festival in 1981 put on in London, NYC, and LA and it featured over 30 different bands including Echo and the Bunnymen, Gang of Four, Devo, The Police, etc. Anyway, they shot it on film and the movie only played a few times an then disapeard forever. So the good people at the Onion decided to revive it, on a smaller scale of course, with two nights of music in NYC and each of the bands performing will be covering one of the original Urgh performers. Shy Child will be covering Devo, naturally. Come out and see this thing and all the money goes to charity too. The Occasion played an amazing show earlier in the month with The Double at Tonic. Their new split 10? is out on Wobblyhed Reords and their self-released debut EP ,will be out on Say Hey in Oct with a bonus track, “Ease Away". They’ve been keeping the new matreial secret but the little we’ve heard is flat out great. The new record will be the psycheldelic masterpieces of 05. Things we’re into these days: Mahavishnu Orchestra “Birds of Fire", The Arcade Fire “Funeral", Dungen “Ta Det Lungt", Caetano Veloso “Caetano Veloso", Ray Russell “ICA", The Sound “Jealousy", Mastodon"Leviathan". 08/17/2004 Catching Up With Say Hey Inouk crosses the pond this week for shows in the UK, check out the events section for these dates as well as shows with On Air Libray, Ours, Do Make Say Think, and Fiery Furnaces!Inouk’s “No Danger” will be at ye olde recording shoppe next week! Their anticipated debut record, “No Danger” will be hitting the streets on 8/24 and it was produced by Chris Zane (Calla, Les Savy Fav, The Boggs) at Gigantic Studios right here in Manhattan, and the title track features haunting backup vocals by the incomparable Deheza twins from On Air Library. One thing is a verifiable fact at this point, and it is that no one has been able yet to categorize the bands unique musical approach. We have heard all manner of infulences bandied about, some are almost inconceivable, but at the very least the music seems to be challenging the listeners to be creative with their comparisons. And this is a good thing. While it may sound suspect coming from the label it is nevertheless true that with this record Inouk have created something completely new and entierly beautiful. Hear me now and beleive me latter, Inouk will be your favorite new band. See Inouk with label mates Shy Child and The Double, who are stellar in their own right, at Mercury Lounge in NYC on Tuesday 7/27. $8. 07/18/2004 Check Out the New Website!
